AccentCare Earns SAGECare Platinum Certification to better serve LGBT community

AccentCare is proud to have earned SAGE Care Platinum Certification in its Washington, DC hospice office. It is the only hospice provider in the District of Columbia that has the distinction. By achieving this certification, team members demonstrate their continued efforts to improve the lives of LGBT residents needing end of life services.

SAGECare certification means that  AccentCare’s staff has completed cultural competence training for the needs and concerns of this aging population. The LGBT community has a complex history with our nation’s health care system, and end of life providers have to take into account historical discrimination and the unique needs of these patients when providing care.

With SAGECare, AccentCare staff has taken training that helps them understand the unique needs of our gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender seniors.  Understanding the unique needs of this population leads to a more welcoming environment by the hospice team.  SAGECare is part of SAGE, one of the oldest organizations dedicated to improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender older adults.

AccentCare’s Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer, Rafael Fantauzzi, said, “AccentCare is dedicated to making meaningful connections with the communities we serve. We promote a culture of inclusion that recognizes people’s differences and with this SAGECare certification, we will be able to demonstrate that commitment to giving the best care available in the District of Columbia because of this unique competency.”  AccentCare’s hospice line of business is committed to achieving SAGECare Platinum certification in 2022 and expanding to other areas of its business in the future.

The LGBT community needs caregivers who understand the challenges they encounter and their unique histories, so the care team can build empathetic relationships and provide meaningful care for who they are as a whole. This training gives AccentCare an opportunity to expand, transform and elevate the LGBT person-directed services that the AccentCare Washington, DC  team will provide. Executive Director Altonia Garrett says, “Offering this training to my team and being awarded platinum status, is a significant step towards creating an advanced illness care workforce equipped with the knowledge and compassion required to ensure individualized care and support to our LBGT community members.”

AccentCare’s hospice services in Maryland include Montgomery, Prince George’s, Howard, and Anne Arundel Counties in the Washington DC suburbs.
