Monday Update

Monday greeted us with news that more communities in AccentCare’s service footprint are deciding that a shelter-in-place order is the best solution to slow the spread of COVID-19 in their area. Dallas County will be shelter-in-place as of midnight tonight, and it’s likely as the week goes on that other AccentCare communities will follow suit. Remember, we all are classified as essential employees, and so our movement around our communities on behalf of AccentCare’s business is allowable under the order. We’ve said that a few times, it bears repeating, though.

The “Surge” is a word that you’ll often hear this week, and more often next week. It’s meant to describe the point in time when the number of COVD-19 infected people puts pressure on the nation’s hospital system. Social distancing and shelter-in-place orders are primarily intended to reduce the Surge or slow the infection rate down just enough so that the hospital system can take good care of the terrible cases.

This is where AccentCare becomes a critical part of the solution. If we can help hospitals transition non-COVID-19 patients back to their homes, and into our care, it frees up a hospital bed for someone who really needs it. The Surge is sadly already affecting New York. Even before the Surge impacts other parts of the country, AccentCare is already seeing an increase in referrals from hospitals that are clearing their beds in advance of the volume they anticipate. If you think about that for a minute, it means we’re really part of the first responders already, and that needs to be our mindset.

I had a chance to talk about AccentCare’s role in handling the Surge with NBC this morning, and I’m sharing that link here. I also had the opportunity to share with them our emerging telemedicine strategy, which you’ll hear more about late this week. Take NBC’s interest in our story as proof that what we are doing is something on the order of being a first responder. Stay motivated because what you are doing truly matters.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to see my Sunday message, I want you to take the time to read my message to all of you. On Sunday, I outlined my operating principles for AccentCare. While those principles are very personal to me, I’m also highly confident that if we operate by those six points, we will rise above this together.
Enjoy your Monday evening
